New reference helps those preparing for Wastewater Analyst Certification

February 11, 2023 -- Schenectady, NY -- A new reference designed to help laboratory analysts prepare for the Wastewater Analyst Certification process is now available from Genium Publishing Corporation. Lectures on Wastewater Analysis and Interpretation by Roy-Keith Smith provides the necessary regulatory and technical background to prepare candidates for the exam.

The book evolved from a series of lectures delivered by the author in an ongoing 40-hour training class at Analytical Services, Inc. (an environmental testing laboratory) and at the Georgia Water and Wastewater Institute. The lectures cover the basic knowledge expected of capable bench-level analytical chemists and analysts in the wastewater and environmental testing industries.

The intent of this class is to prepare students to take the Wastewater Laboratory Analyst Certification administered by the Association of Boards of Certification and other certifying authorities or licensing agencies. These exams test the level of knowledge that operators of treatment plants and lab analysts must know to properly interpret test results.

The book applies to four classes of certification from basic skills used by treatment plant operators or lab technicians performing process control tests through more advanced and expert qualifications required of analysts and laboratory managers. Unlike study guides that merely provide practice questions for those preparing to sit for an exam, this text gives the reader a complete practical background in the chemistry needed to perform and interpret the tests.

Included are sections covering instrument and traditional testing methods followed by a discussion of the training and certification process. Particular attention is paid to the quality control/quality assurance issues of testing procedures. Personal anecdotes drawn from the author' s extensive professional experience are sprinkled throughout the text and help put unusual or anomalous situations into everyday perspective for the less familiar reader.

The text is designed as a learning aid either in conjunction with a formal lecture presentation or as a stand-alone self-study instruction manual. Although the lectures are oriented for the new analyst, seasoned veterans will find many nuggets of useful information.

The author is a graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology and holds a Ph.D. from Colorado State University. Formerly a research faculty member in chemistry at California Institute of Technology, Dr. Smith has also been a faculty member of Southern College of Technology. He is currently Analytical Methods Manager at Analytical Services, Inc. in Norcross, Georgia, and is licensed as both a Water and Wastewater Laboratory Analyst in the state of Georgia. He has developed and presented industrial education courses on environmental analysis and other topics for Hewlett Packard and Fisher Scientific. Author of numerous books and papers, Dr. Smith has previously written the Handbook of Environmental Analysis, now in it's fourth edition, and co-authored Environmental Laboratory Data Evaluation for Genium Publishing.
