Plastics: Process to Product

Plastics are changing the world at an incredible pace. Thousands of products once made from metals, wood and glass are now being created using plastics manufacturing processes most people have never even heard of. Engineers and manufacturing personnel who will one day be responsible for designing and producing plastic products must have a basic knowledge of these processes.

This program takes you on the floor of plastics manufacturing operations where you see and hear machines turn a wide variety of raw materials into finished plastics products. Viewers obtain a basic understanding of the properties of plastics and a concise overview and demonstration of the most widely used plastics manufacturing processes. The processes covered in this program include:

Extrusion - Viewers see how heated plastic pellets and resin are squeezed through dies in continuous streams to be shaped, and then cooled and converted into finished products.

Expansion - Demonstrated is the process for manufacturing sheets of thermal insulation. Viewers see beads of polystyrene expanded and bonded using chemicals, steam injection, and molds.

Lamination - In this process, layers of materials are stacked on top of one another and pressed together. Viewers see both the spray-up and hand lay-up processes.

Thermoforming - The program demonstrates variations of vacuum forming as well as pressure forming. Positive and negative molds are shown.

Foaming - Demonstrated is a foaming process used to insulate water pipes in an outdoor whirlpool spa. Foaming guns are shown and the chemical reactions which produce the end product are explained.

Compression Molding - This segment demonstrates thermo set plastic pellets being compressed and molded into electrical plug connectors.

Transfer Molding - Viewers learn why this process is favored when product specifications require metal inserts to be molded within plastic parts. Injection Molding - Viewers witness the speed and precision of the process and learn why injection molding is most suitable for mass production of hard plastic parts.

Blow Molding - Viewers see motor oil containers being made and witness the ballet-like grace of the blow molding process.

Rotational Molding - This segment points out that rotational molding is a less costly but much slower process than blow molding.
