Gauges and Measurements

The definition of gauges and the importance of exact measurement is explained in this program. The terms accuracy and precision are defined along with an explanation of the need for close tolerances in highly technical industries. The importance of standards and the development of the National Bureau of Standards (and other international standards organizations) are discussed. The role of quality control in maintaining accurate gauges, gauge cribs, and records appears as an outgrowth of the emphasis on gauges and measurement. The major types of gauges and measuring devices used in industry such as micrometers, dial indicators, optical comparitors, air gauges, vernier calipers, gauge blocks, go/no-go gauges, electronic gauges, and others are all shown and explained.
