Introduction

While many engineers remember that a logical address (e.g. IP address) is needed for each host interface, some forget that along with the logical address there is an associated physical address or hardware address called Media Access Control Address or MAC Address. This physical address is part of the Data Link Layer and is needed for all communication on the network, including Layer 2 switching and bridging.

So how do hosts on a network really know how to find anyone else on the network? Do they maintain a table of addresses? Do they just guess, or is it magic? The real answer is a little-noticed protocol called ARP or Address Resolution Protocol. Virtually all protocols, whether they be TCP, AppleTalk, or any other protocol, use a form of ARP to find other hosts on the network. In order for the host to send a packet to another host, it needs to know the MAC address of the machine's interface. This is where ARP comes into play.

ARP provides the mechanism to find the target's MAC address knowing only the IP address, for example. This tutorial covers how ARP provides this functionality and why ARP is important to network functionality, especially in a network using Ethernet connectivity.
