Introduction

A WAN is a bit of a different beast. Like the elephant in the children's story, a WAN may look very much like a LAN in some respects; however, it is also very like a telephone network in others. Its equipment shares the names of LAN equipment, though not the characteristics. And so on. To function as a network professional, you need to have some idea of how things work "inside the cloud" if you want to make them work for you instead of accepting what the Sales Engineer from BBOS Data Services (Baby Bell On Steroids, you know: the one that swallowed two of its siblings) thinks you should buy.

A key difference between a WAN and a LAN is the administrative model. A LAN exists and is administered to carry its own traffic; a WAN exists and is administered to carry the traffic of others (the subscribers). The WAN, in fact, is the "bridge" between two or more otherwise isolated LANs. Like a LAN bridge, WANs operate at "Layer 2," but that can be only an approximation.

The reason it can be only an approximation is that the OSI Reference Model is an abstraction; real world protocol suites do not necessarily map exactly to its layers. However, WANs do operate at the Physical Layer and at one level above it, which we will continue to refer to as Layer 2, despite the inexactness of the term. WAN switches generally operate at these lower layers only; they do not decapsulate a packet as far as the Layer 3 header. Therefore, logical addressing is of little or no help in moving traffic at high speed along backbone links, since the traffic must be referenced to the Layer 2 address of the next hop anyway. Better to simply use the latter.

In speaking of switching packets, it should be noted that, to the LAN community, a packet is an encapsulated segment from a higher-level protocol; the encapsulation occurs at Layer 3. The WAN community, however, refers more generically to something called "fast packet forwarding," where the packet is simply the payload of a frame or cell. This logically follows from the administrative model: a packet, to the WAN, is Other People's Data, whatever that might be. WAN switches move that data from one circuit to another; internally, to the WAN switch, it is the entire circuit that is switched, not the data. Data is just along for the ride.

WAN Generations: An Evolution

WAN technologies evolved with the media that carry the traffic; they are the protocols needed to make a given set of physical media work reliably enough to deliver the business. The "classic" WAN technologies are the X.25 families of the 1970s, the Broadband ISDN family of the 1980s (including Frame Relay, ISDN, and ATM), and emerging technologies such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and optical networking. These generations reflect the physical media underlying them: X.25 assumed analog modems or T1/E1 over copper, B-ISDN assumed SDH/SONET optical media, and the newer methods tend to assume optics plus intelligence.

To look at each of these generations in turn, the X.25 protocol suite, not needed in North America very much any more, has a great deal of error detection and correction built in, as it was used over unreliable connections. Consequently, it is rather slow. It still can be a valuable protocol in niche applications involving very high error rate lines (as might be found in developing countries, or over radio), or with certain types of high-delay satellite links. Products considered modern "WAN switches," however, do not run X.25. When X.25 is needed, it runs on router platforms.

Its immediate successor, Frame Relay, assumes connections are sufficiently reliable that the occasional error can be left to an upper layer protocol (such as TCP) to detect and order the correction. There is a Frame Check Sequence (a CRC) in the Frame Relay trailer, but it is used only to discard damaged traffic to not waste switch resources and downstream bandwidth on something that will need retransmittal anyway. (We'll look at the frame in more detail when we look at how Frame Relay implements the basic principles of a WAN.) Frame Relay was intended to serve as an access technology to ATM, which was intended to serve as an internal carrier technology.

ATM was optimized for increasingly fast fiber optic networks. Such networks were characterized both by being faster and by having much lower error rates than existing networks, but they did not introduce some of the new topologies and transmission system intelligence characteristics of the most recent "optical networking" proposals.

ATM designers chose to model their information flow on fixed-length cells rather than variable-length frames. This can be confusing, because higher-layer protocols assume they can initiate variable-length packets that will be encapsulated in variable-length frames. The cell length chosen (48 bytes of payload) was a Solomonic compromise between the 32-byte cell proposed by Europe, where echo suppression was not normally employed on telephone circuits (and who therefore needed very fast internal switching), and the 64-byte cell favored by the U.S. and Japan, where echo suppression was employed, thereby affording a longer payload.

ATM's cellular design makes the most of high-speed links by not delaying the traffic inside the switch any longer than necessary. It also solves the problem of treating the traffic just well enough to get it where it needs to be when it needs to be there (and not sooner, lest it use more resources than the customer paid for). This is Quality of Service (QoS). The need for transit speed and QoS led to a cell structure, so the traffic could be rapidly switched from one port to another without spending time in a buffer waiting for the rest of the frame to arrive. The cells are therefore short, meaning packets must be segmented and reassembled, and it is often necessary to include in the ATM header an indicator of what type of traffic is being carried -- the LLC/SNAP identifier. The cost of this small, fast cell switching design is a relatively high overhead, which has been considered worth it until a better, faster, cheaper technology comes along. (We'll look at that overhead in more detail when we examine how ATM implements WAN principles.)

"Faster" arrived with SONET; "better" and "cheaper" can be argued (especially better: technological "better" discussions are probably as safe as religious or political ones -- you go first). Transporting data on SONET became known as Packet Over SONET (POS). This is popular in the router community, especially since it potentially eliminates an entire layer of WAN equipment: the ATM switches. So far, the multiservice capabilities of ATM switches and the QoS discrimination of ATM circuit configuration have precluded that hoped-for event.

A possible candidate to solve those issues is a new set of WAN protocols, Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Generalized MPLS (GMPLS). These potentially offer the benefits of ATM without the cell structure and its high overhead (nicknamed the "cell tax"). However, MPLS and GMPLS are still very much in the developmental and testing stages.

Finally, despite the marketing wonder stories, optical switching is not close to ready for deployment. Engineering development is currently focused on simple cross-connects, which merely transfer a data stream from one port to another, without the ability to add or extract substreams.

This paper will describe WAN technologies by their principles (so you are prepared for whatever comes along), and focus on how today's standards, Frame Relay and ATM, implement those principles. We'll also include more detail about POS and MPLS/GMPLS to improve your understanding of all the buzz about them.
