Multiprotocol Label Switching

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is an evolving technology. Originally intended as a technology for increasing packet throughput in routers, that purpose is now obsolete because the newest routers are able to achieve wire-rate packet throughput. MPLS has become a technology that provides packet switching networks with an ability to deploy traffic engineering and other features. It offers capabilities that complement rather than replace IP. MPLS technology adds a connection-oriented flavor to the connectionless IP.
