ZONE STUDY GUIDES FOR CISCO's® CCIE™ and CCNP™ EXAM

ISIS Part II: Hierarchical Networks

This tutorial provides the reader with a solid understanding of the tools and techniques used when building multi-tiered ISIS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) networks. Data networks often employ hierarchical topologies in order to enable a degree of scalability. In IP, such networks offer numerous benefits, including the ability to contain the flow of control traffic, along with the ability to summarize and aggregate IP prefixes in order to minimize routing table size. Also, faster convergence during state transitions can often be achieved in this manner. ISIS offers a two-tiered hierarchy much like that of OSPF.

This Study Guide is part of a two-part Study Guide Series addressing ISIS:
Part One - ISIS Routing In Single Areas
Part Two - ISIS Hierarchical Networks

Update: November 2002
The Part One and Part Two Tutorials have been revised and updated. They now include new sidebars, clarifications, and new material added by author Peter Van Oene.
